Big mountain lines and deep powder in Japan’s ski and snowboard Mecca, the Northern Japanese Alps. Hakuba definitely lives up to the hype as the biggest steepest mountains in Japan.
Hakuba conditions are historically best in January when the temperature is cold and the snow falls more consistently. Later in the year there is a greater risk of possible rain which can add a weak layer in the snowpack and increase the avalanche hazard.

The Terrain
The terrain in Hakuba is defined by dramatic vertical relief, with mountains rising thousands of meters from the valley floor. From steep, committing lines and exposed ribs to sheltered tree skiing, the Northern Japanese Alps offer remarkable variety. All terrain is accessible via lifts, allowing guides to efficiently seek out the best snow and adapt to changing conditions throughout the day.

When are the best conditions?
We prefer Hakuba in January for the coldest temperatures and most consistent snowfall. As the season progresses, the risk of rain increases, potentially adding weak layers to the snowpack and elevating avalanche hazard.

Itinerary
Arrival Day
Day 1
MEETING PLACE IS 2PM AT THE HAKUBA STATION

All members of the team are responsible for arranging their own airfare to Japan and traveling to Hakuba Station in the Nagano Prefecture. We recommend landing in Tokyo (either Narita or Haneda Airport) one day early, as most flights arrive in the late afternoon or evening. This gives you time to rest, recover from jet lag, and ensure you’re ready to travel the next day.
Emergency Preparation and Risk Management
Day 2
We’ll begin with a risk-management briefing and a comprehensive rescue training session to prepare you for the week and build strong, practical backcountry skills.
Easy ski tour from a local resort to gauge group ability.
Dinner at one of the many authentic Japanese restaurants nearby.
Exploring Hakuba Valley
DAY 3 - 7
Daily breakfast at the lodge.
Each day, your guide selects the best destination in the Hakuba Valley for optimal conditions.
Use lifts to access untouched terrain, then tour into the backcountry powder.
Afternoons include onsen time—either at the lodge or a public bath.
Every night: a new local restaurant experience with your crew.
Departure Day
Day 8
Meet for breakfast at 8:00 AM.
Depart the Accommodation by 10:00 AM.
Train station to Bus Station by 11:00 AM
